Just in time for the announcement of the return of the ROUND TABLE OF AMERICA, J. R. LOFLIN reviews my first foray into the BIG BANG COMICS UNIVERSE, almost 20 years ago. Sounds like it didn't age bad at all! ![]()
"Some might say I'm undergoing a Personality Crisis with all these reviews, but once you're caught in it, it's hard to escape the Big Bang! Big Bang Comics, that is. Not that I want to escape, mind you, but never mind that, have a seat at the Round Table, you're in for a treat!
Pedro Angosto crafts a one-and-done tale here that feels so much more epic than it lets on. We get to see the entire Round Table of America in action against a series of mysterious assailants who seem to mirror their abilities, if not their personalities. What is going on here? A fiendish plot by a villain to seize an item he needs! Who and what, I will leave for potential readers to discover, but I will talk briefly about why I love this issue.
Growing up, my favorite superhero comic in the JLA-style was the second Super Powers miniseries, where we see each group of heroes against their own foe before combining their might to face the final confrontation against their nemesis. A similar approach is taken and achieved here, to excellent effect. This story reminds me of that classic tale and of several story arcs from the now-classic Morrison JLA run. My favorite, Thunder Girl, is there, as well as Ultiman, Knight Watchman, Ms. Merlin...you name it, they're there! And if you're NOT familiar with the Round Table of America, you should track down this issue (by buying it direct from Big Bang Comics' website!) and reading the adventure for yourself! The art is incredible and really suits the story well, kudos to Carlos Rodriguez on that front! I had to double-check more than once to make sure I wasn't reading a lost DC classic story! Wait, if I double-check more than once, would that make it a quadruple-check? Is quadruple still a word? I don't know, but what I do know is that I enjoyed the heck out of this book!
Classic DC action mixed with a touch of Cosmic Marvel, wrapped up in a crunchy, delicious Indie Comics shell? What's not to love? Get this one for your bookshelves and/or longboxes TODAY!
